Slave Journals

For tomorrow (2/7), we will be writing slave journals. Here is the information that the students need to use to create their journals.

Creating a Slave Journal

You will write three entries in a journal from the perspective of a slave living in the mid-1800s.
Your entries should describe how a slave might have faced slavery and discrimination.

Entry 1: On this first page, describe yourself and your living and working conditions. Include:
• a date and location, such as November 4, 1853, Johnson Plantation, South Carolina.
• your name, age, and a brief a description of your family.
• a description of your living conditions.
• a description of a typical workday and your working conditions.
• an illustration.

Entry 2: On the second page, describe a way in which you have resisted slavery. Include:
• a date and location.
• a description of your quiet or open act of rebellion.
• an illustration.

Entry 3: On the third page, describe ways in which you and other slaves maintain a strong
sense of community. Include:
• a description of your favorite leisure time activity.
• a description of a church meeting.
• an illustration.

The Girls ACC field trip will be in March, but we need to recieve the permission slip by Feb 6th. You can find the permission slip in the "Document Manger" section of my website.

Causes of the Revolution Retest

If you are interested in taking the Causes of the Revolution retest, the test can be found in the document manager area of my website. You may use the internet, and you may work together. This should be a reteaching opportunity. You may only submit one retest. You may want to print the test, find the answers, and then go back to put the answers in. Make sure to put "A" for the last four. It may count them as wring, but I will make sure to change that for the grade.

Week of 10/10

This week we will focus on how North Carolina became a distinct Colony.  Do you know how North and South Carolina separated?  This might be a good chance to let your student show off some new knowledge.  The only homework as it stands now is Tuesday.  Students will be doing a triple venn diagram of the 3 colonial regions.  We may begin this in class.

Week of 9/12 and Guilford Courthouse Extra Credit

Thanks for checking in.  This week we will focus on the early settlement of North Carolina.  Mon is a little out of sequence, and we will be talking about 9/11, and the roots of modern terrorism.  The rest of the week we will discuss Columbus, the Lost Colony, and the Jamestown settlement.  

The extra credit details/instructions are below.   

1 Print the worksheets. Click on "GC" in the documents section of my website.

2 Go to the park find the information and fill in the worksheets. This may take many hours. There is a battlefield section and a museum section. I believe the Museum closes at 5 pm daily. 

3 Take a picture of yourself at the park near an identifiable landmark. Pictures can be emailed, brought in on device, or printed.

4 Turn both in by 10/26. No exceptions can be made because this is the last day of the grading period.

5. DO NOT wait until the last minute to do this. Weather does not always cooperate, and you probably cannot get it done after school in one trip. It is NOT alright to take off of school to do this.

6 If you all go to the park together it is OK to do this with friends. Do not give your work to someone else. 

7 You will receive 5 100%'s in the grade book; the equivalent of a perfect test grade. 

8 Questions other than extensions email me. 

Project due Friday

We are doing a mini project that is due Friday.  Students will be doing this entirely at home.  Students will create a 3D model of the regions of North Carolina.  The main purpose is to get across the theme that elevation is what determines our geographic regions in North Carolina.  Students can use any medium they wish to make the model.  Clay, cardboard, and uncooked pasta are a couple of materials they may wish to use.  The model need not be larger than a sheet of paper, but it is up to the discretion of the student.  I do not expect the project to take more than an hour or two.

Thank you for visiting.  This is where I will occasionally update information for our class.  You can follow this like  you would any other blog.  This week we are studying the geography of North Carolina.  There is a quiz on Friday, but it is not necessary to study for it.  We will be using materials we created in class for the quiz.  Since it is the first quiz I am going to do a completion grade.  This way students can grow to know what to expect in a quiz.  As always, thank you for visiting this site.

Week of March 22nd

Sorry for the late update. This week's focus is Reconstruction. It will be the end of our Civil War Unit. There will likely be a unit test at the end of next week. Here is the schedule for this week.

Week of 3/14

We are going to have a great week this week. Monday, students will be working on writing letters from the perspective of a person witnessing the Civil War. These will be based on photographs from the time period. They will write a rough draft on Monday. While we will begin it in class, many will need to do it for homework. Tuesday, we will share the letter with classmates and make suggestions for a final draft. We will begin the final draft Tuesday. Again it may be necessary for students to finish at home. Wednesday, our team will be going to the Civil Rights Museum in downtown Greensboro. In Social Studies we will watch a short film that studies the Impact of the sit-in movement. Thursday and Friday we will begin our discussion of The Reconstruction Period.

March 7th

We are continuing our discussion of the Civil War. There is homework Monday night; ch 15.3 in the Reading Study Guide. Thursday there is a quiz over all of ch 15. Please make sure your child is reviewing material for the quiz. Friday we will begin a small project where the students will write a paper from the perspective of someone in the Civil War. More details will follow on Friday.

This week we will continue our discussion of the Civil War. Today and tomorrow we will discuss the events of the Civil War. This is the area where main battles and Generals will be discussed. Wednesday we will look at The Gettysburg address. Thursday we will begin our discussion of North Carolina's role in the war. There si no homework this week.

First, I would like to remind everyone to get their field trip permission slips in before Friday. If your son or daughter has forgotten or misplaced their slip, you can find a copy in the documents section of this site.

This week we will be wrapping up our discussion of the pre-revolution colonies.

Monday we will watch the first episode of the series "America: The Story of Us." This is an excellent series, and this episode focuses on the colonization of America starting with Jamestown, and going until the breakout of revolution against the British. For homework, students will develop a DVD jacket cover for "the Story of Us." They will make illustrations that show the greatness of America.

Tue: We will look at primary sources and how we analyze them as historians. No HW

Wed: We will begin ch 6, a look at NC as a colony, with the focus "what made NC a distinct colony?" no HW

Thursday CH6.2 no HW

Fri Ch 6.3 no HW.

Don't forget about the extra credit due by Oct 26^th. There are only a few weekends left to do it. If you do not know what the extra credit is, view my earlier posts.

Mon: How did triangle trade contribute to the economy of the New World. HW: students will be writing about the middle passage from the perspective of a slave. They will use RAFT thinking to develop their writing. This needs to be 1 page front.

R- Role: Who are you? Develop the central character from whos perspective you are writing.

A- Audience : Who are you writing to ?

F- Format : What form will your writing assume ? ex letter, journal, diary, newpaper, autobiography.

T- Topic : What are you writing about? What is the purpose of the writing?
